Our Web Design Process: From Discovery to Launch

Web Design Process - Discovery & Website Roadmapping

Most websites don’t fail because of poor design. They fail because too much was unclear from the start — who the site is really for, what matters most, and what someone should actually do when they get there.

That’s why our process starts long before any visuals or development. We focus first on clarity: aligning strategy, structure, and content so every decision has a purpose — and nothing gets built twice.

If you’re trying to figure out what it’s like to work with us, or what to expect from a web design project in general, this is the post for you.

Before We Start: Is This the Right Fit?

Not every project is the right fit — and that’s fine. Before we kick anything off, we have a straightforward conversation about your goals, timeline, and budget. No pitch, no pressure. Just a practical chat to figure out whether we’re the right partner for what you need.

If you’re still in the early stages and trying to figure out how to evaluate agencies, our Guide to Choosing a Web Design Agency is a good place to start.

Step 1: Discovery & the 4P Clarity Framework

This is where the real work begins — and where most agencies skip straight to mockups. We don’t.

Every project starts with our 4P Clarity Framework: a structured discovery process that establishes the strategic foundation before a single pixel gets pushed. It’s not a workshop for the sake of it — it’s the thing that prevents expensive rework later.

Persona — Who is this for?

We map out who the site needs to serve, how they find you, and how they make decisions. Without this, websites tend to speak to everyone and land with no one.

Problem — What’s unclear today?

We identify where clarity breaks down in the current experience — friction in the user journey, messaging that’s too broad, or structure that buries the important stuff. These insights shape the information architecture before design begins.

Promise — What needs to be communicated clearly?

We define the core value proposition the website must carry — consistently, across every page. This becomes the reference point for content decisions and page hierarchy throughout the project.

Product — What needs to exist to support action?

Finally, strategy becomes structure. Sitemap, content model, key user paths — all defined before design starts. The result is a shared picture of what success looks like, so we’re building the right thing from day one.

Discovery is a paid phase. At the end of it, you get a clear roadmap and a project estimate that’s accurate — no surprise invoices, no scope creep. And if you decide to take it elsewhere? You still walk away with a plan you can use.

Step 2: Design System & Page Templates

Web Design Process - Website Architecture

Once the structure is defined, we design systems — not just pages.

This phase establishes the visual direction, homepage and core page templates, and a reusable component library so every page can be assembled consistently. Design decisions are grounded in the clarity work from Step 1 — every component has a role, every layout supports understanding and action.

This is also where your input matters most. We’ll share work in progress, gather feedback, and refine before anything gets built in WordPress. It’s much easier to change a design file than a live page.

Step 3: Build, Migration & Launch

With strategy, structure, and design signed off, we move into the WordPress build. This phase includes content migration, accessibility and performance checks, and thorough QA before anything goes live.

Because clarity was established early, this phase is focused on execution — not relitigating decisions. That’s what keeps projects on track.

Before launch, we walk you through the site and make sure you’re comfortable managing day-to-day content updates. We build on WordPress specifically because it gives you real ownership — you’re not locked into a platform, and the site is yours to take anywhere.

How Long Does It Take?

A typical project runs 10–14 weeks of active development from the start of discovery to launch. That’s the work we control.

The most common source of delay isn’t on our end — it’s content. Copy, photography, logos, product descriptions — if those aren’t ready when we need them, the timeline stretches. We’re upfront about this from the start, and we’ll flag exactly what we need from you and when.

If you’re working with a copywriter or photographer, the earlier you get them involved the better. We’re happy to coordinate directly with them to keep things moving.

Step 4: Ongoing Support & Growth

Web Design Process - Management and Marketing

Launch isn’t the finish line — it’s the starting gun. A website that isn’t maintained, improved, and actively used as a marketing tool tends to quietly go stale.

Most of our clients stay with us after launch through a monthly plan that covers:

  • Hosting & maintenance — managed WordPress hosting, security monitoring, updates, and backups
  • Search engine optimization — ongoing keyword research, page optimization, technical SEO, and content development
  • Content support — new pages, blog posts, and copy updates as your business evolves

You work directly with me — not a rotating cast of account managers. That’s not a selling point I trot out for effect; it’s just how this works. Same person who built your site is the person keeping it running and growing.

What You Get at the End

A website built through this process is one that:

  • Makes it immediately clear who it’s for and what to do next
  • Communicates your value without needing to explain it
  • Is built on a platform you own and can take anywhere
  • Has the technical foundations to perform well in search
  • Can be iterated and improved over time as your business grows

It’s not just a collection of pages. It’s a system — and when clarity drives that system, everything works better.
